Artificial intelligence is widely hailed as a miracle of technology, with the potential to revolutionize the way we live. Like human intelligence, it has the ability to recognize patterns making it a powerful tool for analysis and decision-making, with applications in finance, business, science and media.

However, AI is also haunted by the limitations of the data that feeds it, and just like human intelligence, fall into the same trap of bias and discrimination. When applied to our criminal justice system, the consequences can be severe.

This month, we talk to an expert who stands at the crossroads of technology and the legal system, Patrick K. Lin, author of the book “Machine See, Machine Do” coming out December 13, 2021.

About Patrick

Patrick K. Lin is an author and expert on artificial intelligence, technology policy, and algorithmic bias. He has worked for the ACLU's Speech, Privacy & Technology Project, ForHumanity, and the AI Fairness & Data Privacy practice at Eisenberg & Baum LLP. He is a frequent speaker at AI ethics and technology law and policy conferences.

While completing his law degree at Brooklyn Law School, Patrick wrote Machine See, Machine Do: How Technology Mirrors Bias in Our Criminal Justice System. His book has received early praise from Ben Wizner, the principal legal advisor to Edward Snowden, and David Ryan Polgar, the founder and director of All Tech Is Human.

Peter is the author of Blockchain Applications in Finance, has been featured in numerous publications, including Forbes, Business Insider, MSN, Yahoo!Finance, and Bitcoinist, and is a frequent speaker at blockchain/crypto conferences around the globe. A “gypsy” brewing company based out of the Twelve Percent Beer Project in North Haven, Timber Ales gained incredible success rapidly, earning the title “Best New Brewery in the World” for 2020 by Rate Beer. Since then, he has realized his original vision of developing a barrel program, which launched this past May.

Harrison Cheng is a former Peace Corps volunteer who served as an English instructor in Lanzhou, north-west China. The two incredible years were spent building community and empowering students, teachers, and locals. He then joined NYU Shanghai as a Community Engagement and Outreach Program Manager to develop partnerships for service learning / volunteer programs.


Harrison now works in the federal government at the EPA as a funds controller. He graduated with a Finance and International Business degree from NYU Stern and started his career at Citibank, but discovered that success and fulfillment look different for everyone, and work in the public / nonprofit sectors can provide some of life’s most meaningful and rewarding moments. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Andrew Stanco currently works at the fintech startup One, which connects people with their money. There, he works in operations to make those connections a reality. John Sanchez is a lifelong Bronx resident, the District Manager for Bronx Community Board 6, and a Candidate for City Council in the 15th District in The Bronx, which includes the neighborhoods of Belmont, East Tremont, and West Farms. Throughout his career, John has secured a $200,000 grant for Bronx small businesses, pushed to bring the borough its first youth court, and developed the city’s first year-round paid Community Board internship program. John previously served as New York City Advocacy Manager for the Northeast Charter Schools Network helping advocate for increased charter school funding and also served in the New York State Assembly as Deputy Chief of Staff for a Bronx Assembly member. John serves on the nonprofit boards of Housing Rights Initiative, Legacy College Prep Charter School, and Immaculate Conception School.
